When your players have goals for each practice and game, it provides more opportunities for celebration and compliments (see Coaching Success Series #2: Why Complimentary Coaches Are More Successful). And as the coach continually improves the ability to see what is going well, he or she also has more chances to catch players doing more things right, rather than catching them doing things wrong.
|
1. |
Make a list of the things your team/player can reasonably expect from you as the coach (short-term goals), and the results you can get if you do those things consistently (long-term goals). |
2. |
Make another list of the things you expect from the players (short-term) and the results you can expect if they do it (long-term). |
3. |
In the meeting, DON'T give them your lists. Instead, ask them what they expect of you and one another, and what the results will be. Chances are good that their list and your list will be nearly identical, but instead of being told by you what you expect, they get the opportunity to tell you what they expect. This has a huge impact on their commitment level and peer accountability. |
4. |
Document the list and follow-up. If it is team meeting at the start of the season (or a re-set meeting halfway through), you can call it a "team contract" or "team vision" and post it. If you are setting short-term goals for a practice or game, determine how you are going to track the behaviors, who is going to do it, and then follow-up by reporting how they did. Congratulate success and ask them to report what they did differently to improve. |
Among many other feature's, the Hawk Planners for Coach's have tabbed sections to record custom entries for individual, group, and team skills and goals.
P.S. Try it at home (or at work) and be amazed.
See You At the Top!!
